Community awareness and Sensitiztion at RIRI FM

Promoting Disability Awareness Through Community Engagement

On 6th August 2026, a Community Awareness and Sensitization activity was held at RIRI FM in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, to promote greater understanding of disability and highlight the importance of inclusion and support for persons with disabilities.

The engagement provided an opportunity to reach the wider community through a platform that connects with residents across Nanyuki and surrounding areas. The discussions focused on disability awareness, available support services, and the role communities play in creating an environment where persons with disabilities can participate and thrive.

A major focus was addressing misconceptions and stigma surrounding disability. Participants were encouraged to recognise persons with disabilities based on their abilities and potential rather than their limitations. The forum emphasised the importance of treating every individual with dignity, respect, and equal consideration.

The session also highlighted the importance of early identification, assessment, and intervention, particularly for children with disabilities. Parents and caregivers were encouraged to seek professional assessment when they notice developmental concerns or other challenges affecting a child’s wellbeing. Timely assessment helps families understand a child’s needs and access appropriate services and support.

Another important message was the need for families and communities to work together. Disability support extends beyond medical services. Children and adults with disabilities often require support in education, rehabilitation, social participation, assistive technology, and other areas of daily life. Strong cooperation between families, professionals, community organisations, local leaders, and service providers helps create better outcomes.

Using RIRI FM as a platform for community sensitization also demonstrated the important role of media in promoting disability inclusion. Radio and other community communication channels provide an effective way of sharing information, challenging harmful stereotypes, and helping families understand where to seek assistance.

For Naromoru Disabled Children’s Home, community outreach remains an important part of its commitment to improving the lives of children with disabilities. Awareness activities help bridge information gaps and encourage communities to become more supportive and inclusive.

The 6th August engagement at RIRI FM reinforced the importance of continued community dialogue. Through awareness, education, and collaboration, communities can help reduce stigma, improve access to services, and create opportunities for persons with disabilities to live with dignity and participate fully in society.
