On 12th August 2026, a Community Awareness and Sensitization Forum was held at the Matanya Chief’s Office in Laikipia County. The forum brought together community members, local leaders, caregivers, persons with disabilities, and other stakeholders to discuss disability inclusion and the support available to persons with disabilities within the community.

The forum focused on increasing community awareness about disability and addressing misconceptions and stigma. Participants were encouraged to promote dignity, respect, inclusion, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
A key area of discussion was the importance of early identification and assessment of disability. Families and caregivers were encouraged to seek appropriate assessment and support for children and adults with disabilities. Early intervention helps individuals access services and resources suited to their needs.
The forum also provided an opportunity to share information about disability-related services and the role of different stakeholders in supporting persons with disabilities. Participants discussed the importance of collaboration between families, local administration, health professionals, schools, community organisations, and other service providers.
Community participation was emphasised as an important part of creating an inclusive environment. Persons with disabilities should have opportunities to participate in education, healthcare, social activities, economic opportunities, and other aspects of community life.

The involvement of the Matanya Chief’s Office provided an important platform for bringing disability issues closer to the community. Local administration plays an important role in mobilising residents, sharing information, identifying community needs, and connecting families with relevant services.
For Naromoru Disabled Children’s Home, community awareness and sensitization activities remain an important part of promoting the wellbeing and inclusion of children with disabilities. Such forums help families understand available support while encouraging communities to become more responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities.
The Matanya forum reinforced the importance of working together to build communities where persons with disabilities are respected, supported, and included.
Through awareness, collaboration, and collective action, communities can help remove barriers and create better opportunities for persons with disabilities.
