Disability Assessment Training in Nanyuki

Building Capacity for Better Disability Services

From 21st to 24th July 2026, a Disability Assessment Training was conducted in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, to strengthen the capacity of professionals involved in identifying, assessing, and supporting persons with disabilities.

The four-day training provided an opportunity for participants to build their knowledge and practical skills in disability assessment. The sessions focused on improving the assessment process and ensuring that persons with disabilities are appropriately identified and linked to relevant support services.

A key focus of the training was the importance of accurate and comprehensive disability assessments. Proper assessment helps professionals understand an individual’s abilities, challenges, and specific support needs. It also provides important information for making appropriate referrals and recommendations.

Participants engaged in discussions and practical learning around different aspects of the assessment process. The training encouraged a person-centred approach, where each individual’s circumstances, abilities, and needs are considered when determining the most appropriate form of support.

The training also highlighted the importance of early identification and intervention, particularly for children with disabilities. Early assessment allows families to better understand their children’s needs and seek appropriate services such as rehabilitation, education, assistive devices, and other forms of support.

Another important aspect of the training was strengthening collaboration among professionals and stakeholders. Effective disability services require coordination between health workers, social workers, educators, caregivers, families, community organisations, and local authorities. Improved collaboration helps reduce gaps in service delivery and ensures individuals receive more coordinated support.

Participants were also encouraged to promote dignity and respect throughout the assessment process. Disability assessment should not focus only on limitations. It should recognise the strengths, abilities, potential, and aspirations of each person.

For Naromoru Disabled Children’s Home, capacity-building activities such as the Nanyuki Disability Assessment Training contribute to the wider goal of improving services and opportunities for children and persons with disabilities. Strengthening the skills of professionals helps communities identify needs earlier and connect families with appropriate support.

The four-day training reinforced the importance of continued professional development in disability services. By equipping assessment teams with relevant knowledge and practical skills, communities are better positioned to promote inclusion, improve access to services, and support persons with disabilities to participate fully in society.
