Community Dialogue at Matanya Chief’s Office

Building Inclusive Communities in Matanya

On 3rd August 2026, a Community Dialogue on disability inclusion was held at the Matanya Chief’s Office in Laikipia County. The engagement provided a platform for community members, local leaders, caregivers, and other stakeholders to openly discuss issues affecting persons with disabilities.

The dialogue focused on creating greater awareness of disability rights, available support services, and the importance of building inclusive communities. Participants were encouraged to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas on how communities can better support persons with disabilities and their families.

One of the key issues discussed was the stigma and misconceptions surrounding disability. The forum emphasised the need to challenge negative attitudes and promote an understanding of disability based on dignity, equality, and inclusion. Participants were reminded that persons with disabilities have the same rights, abilities, and aspirations as everyone else.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of early identification and disability assessment. Parents and caregivers were encouraged to seek professional support when they identify developmental concerns or other challenges affecting their children. Early assessment and intervention can help families understand individual needs and connect children with appropriate services.

The role of families and the wider community was also emphasised. Supporting persons with disabilities requires cooperation between households, local administration, health professionals, schools, community organisations, and other stakeholders. Open dialogue helps identify gaps in services and creates opportunities for stakeholders to work together towards practical solutions.

Holding the dialogue at the Matanya Chief’s Office also demonstrated the important role of local leadership in promoting disability inclusion. Local administration provides an important link between communities and available government and social support services.

For Naromoru Disabled Children’s Home, community dialogues are an important part of promoting awareness and improving the lives of children with disabilities. They provide an opportunity to listen to community concerns, share information, and encourage collective action.

The Matanya Community Dialogue reinforced the importance of keeping disability issues at the centre of community conversations. Through open discussion, awareness, and collaboration, communities can help reduce stigma, improve access to services, and create an environment where persons with disabilities are respected, supported, and included.
